001 Who I am

001

I live in Killiecrankie, Perthshire with my wife Kirsty.  I began experimenting in film-making with promotion videos for our three holiday cottages (www.lettochcottages.com).  This grew into Lettoch Films, a business in which I produce videos for (mostly but not exclusively) local businesses. The reach of work: from hotels to café’s, farms and local communities has created a stretch and reach that brings enduring value. Every film grows from working in partnership with my clients. This relationship provides a platform for stories of people and place, craft and produce to unfold. Each story brings structure, and purpose to the film and can be most compelling when told by those directly involved. That is why you will often find them in the film.  My job is to merge narrative with the visual, captured via interview, video and drone footage.  My films therefore become our films: a production via partnership between client and me, a story of achievement and aspiration, aimed to inspire and wow the wider world.

002 How does making a film work?

002

Oddly much to making films is invisible. That can make it hard for clients to understand what they are buying: i.e. the process and input required. So here is a very rough, step by step process.

  • We meet (or virtually speak), get to know one another and understand what you are looking for. This is often the first time a client has thought through questions like: Why do I/we need a film now? What do I want it to look and feel like? Who needs to be involved?  And so on.

  • Concept development. At this stage, in partnership with the client, a concept emerges. A rough outline of the story we are trying to tell. Ideally from this comes a ‘shot list’ – what we need to film, who we need to film, and what messages we need to convey. This will inform the next stage of the process – filming.

  • Filming-in-action. Bear in mind factors that bring uncertainty namely: weather, people, animals, locations, and anything that you want included in the film in some ways has its uncertainties, but this can be an emerging process too and add unexpected gems to the final outcome.

  • Now for the invisible bit: at the desk, sorting out the good footage, making sense of it, putting together the storyline, editing, colour grading and sound design. You can be part of this: once the film has reached a draft stage I’ll seek your views and you can influence the look and feel to the final product. This is the bit that takes the most time. For one days filming think 3-4 days editing.

003 Who I Work With

003

Whilst my main business is focussed on ‘local’ work (within a reasonable daily commute) I am able to travel further afield within Scotland for some projects. As I work alone I can keep the costs down to an affordable level. You’re only paying for my time. That means I am more affordable for smaller businesses.

004 What's in my toolbox?

004

I shoot with Sony Alpha cameras and DJI drones in up to 4K resolution footage. I edit videos using the industry leading Adobe Premiere Pro video editing software. I am a fully qualified & insured commercial drone pilot.

My current kit list:

  • Sony A7Rv Mirrorless Camera

  • Sony A7iv Mirrorless Camera

  • GoPro Hero 10 & GoPro Hero 7 Action Cameras

  • DJI Mavic 2 Pro & DJI Mini 3 Pro Drones with 4k recording and RAW photo image capabilities

  • For lighting - various studio and portable lights for video & stills photography

  • For sound - various shotgun microphones as well as the Rode Wireless Pror Mics
